St Hilda’s is really pleased to have received a prize at the Wellington Architecture Awards this week. On top of two Timber Design Awards last year, we’re so happy with the build, to have the earthquake strengthening over the line and to increase our visibility with the community.
Regarding the design, the folded aluminium veil across the 9m window speaks to navigating; finding a place to stand and direction on the journey. The local land-forms, sea, horizon, clouds and stars all depicted in the veil are wayfinding devices that point us upward, toward God and to the cross. We see greater transparency and more luminescence the more we look up.
We have not yet launched major public fundraising for this project. Funding to date has largely been internally gifted and we’re so grateful for a generous church community. However, we’re left with a substantial mortgage, so fundraising will be needed going forward.
In the meantime, look out for gigs and events as we share the space. If you’re curious about church, you’re always welcome to join us on a Thursday or Sunday morning.
